The story begins like this: A woman hears a voice – sounds like a cry for help – from her apartment in the Tony neighborhood of Rome and calls the police. Shaking up Italian society, it was 1975, and the aggressive crime committed by three young men who attended San Leon Magno, a famous all-male Catholic high school, was a reminder of misogyny, class and fascism. In his 2016 novel The Catholic School Albinati attended the same school as the accused. And his semi-written story uses crime as a lens to examine the inherently toxic environment of institutions and conflict. in the film version which premiered in Venice Italian director Stefano Mordini has translated Albinati’s novels into an uneven and sometimes distressing cinematic experience.
